It seems like Meta is once more borrowing (or adopting?) a feature from another platform. This time, Instagram is working on a new feature called Community Chat which is said to be heavily inspired by Discord. Yes, the same Meta that brought us Stories (from Snapchat) and Reels (from TikTok) is now targeting the group chat space.
As per screenshot posted by well-known Instagram leaker Alessandro Paluzzi (@alex193a), Instagram is working on a feature that allows people to make large group chats depending on specific topics. These groups can have up to 250 members, and admins will have the power to moderate the discussions.

Similarly to Discord, the admins have the right to remove messages or even ban members who don’t comply with the rules. Instagram has also stated that these conversations will be checked under its Community Standards, so there’s going to be some level of Meta control as well.
However, we don’t have an official release date, but according to Engadget, an Instagram spokesperson has confirmed that the feature is currently in the internal testing phase. In other words, it’s not available to the public just yet, and there’s no guarantee it ever will be.
However, considering that Meta has already added similar community-based features to WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Instagram joins the club soon.
Instagram’s Community Chat could be a great way to connect people based on similar interests. However, this will depend on how well Meta implements this feature. If done correctly, it could become a useful addition to the platform.
