Play the original 1996 Diablo game directly in your web browser by simply visiting a link. No downloads are needed.

Did you know you can now play the classic 1996 Diablo game without downloading anything? You can play Diablo and its expansion, Hellfire, in any web browser on your PC. I discovered this recently while browsing Reddit, and when I clicked the link, I was sent into the demon-infested world of Diablo.

This amazing project comes from a GitHub source project called Diabloweb. Diabloweb is based on another project, DevilutionX, which helped optimized the Diablo game for modern systems.

Running Diablo on my web browser was surprisingly easy. I visited the official Diabloweb link, and within seconds, I was playing the game. However, to play the full game, you need to upload the official Diablo 1 MPQ files. You can do that by either owning the game or purchasing it on GOG.com and then uploading the files from there.

If you don’t have the full game, don’t worry. You can click on the “Play Shareware” button, which lets you play a limited version of Diablo. Even with the limited version, I had a great time exploring the game and enjoying the familiar pixelated graphics and music I grew up with.

What’s even more exciting is that you can play Diablo 1 on your mobile device. The game’s screen automatically adjusts to fit your device, and it comes with full virtual controls. You can even connect it to your TV for a larger screen experience.

Gamers all over the world, including game developer Shayne Lynch, are already sharing their experiences online. Diablo 1 works smoothly on all major web browsers, and the frame rate and controls are just as responsive as you’d expect.

As someone who remembers playing this game on an old CRT monitor, it feels a bit strange to now be playing it in a web browser. But it’s also incredibly convenient. It’s amazing how technology has advanced to allow us to play these old classic games in such an accessible way.
