Sony has presented something futuristic that might change how we play video games forever. At CES 2025, the tech giant introduced a groundbreaking tech concept to let PlayStation gamers smell what they are playing.

Yes, thanks to the new technology by Sony, you can smell In-Game Elements in real life. This new smell technology is part of Sony’s ‘Future Immersive Entertainment Concept’.

Imagine walking through a post-apocalyptic city in The Last of Us and feeling the dampness of the streets, the stale air of abandoned buildings, or even a slight scent of nature. Sony showed a short trailer for this idea, and it stunned the fans.

The two-minute video shows a scene from The Last of Us game, demonstrating how the combination of advanced audio, realistic visuals, haptic feedback, and now smell can transport players directly into the game world.

Sony explained that this technology combines multiple elements such as the latest location-based technologies, Sony Crystal LED panels, engaging audio, haptics, scent and atmospheric effects to create a completely immersive gaming experience.

Smell Technology: How Does It Work?

Even though Sony doesn’t share full information, it seems this new technology is based on earlier patents such as a Smell-O-Vision-style system designed for gaming.

This is not the first time when gaming companies have explored scent-based technology. In 2013, Microsoft created a pizza-scented Xbox controller as a fun gimmick. However, Sony’s idea is to extend it further than that, putting a scent into the entire game world.

My Personal Opinion

As someone who has spent thousands of hours playing immersive games like The Last of Us and Horizon Zero Dawn, the idea of smelling these environments is both exciting and a little weird.

Sony has not yet announced a release date for this technology. For now, it remains a proof-of-concept project that the gaming world is eagerly watching to see if it becomes a reality.

What do you guys think? Would you like to smell your favourite game worlds? Or does it feel a bit too extreme? Let us know in the comments what you think.
